As someone who uses more local than imported products when it comes to my hair care, it is a bit rare that a more commercial product would pique my curiosity. But! that rare moment happened a while back when I came across The Mane Choice. After doing some research, what stood out to me was their emphasis on "multicultural, healthy hair growth and retention". Now I tend to be a sceptic when it comes to products and claims, so I copped a few products from the line to try out and come to my own conclusion.
So which products did I get? After mulling over their plethora of hair care products, I got:
- Green Tea & Carrot Deep Strengthening & Restorative Mask Treatment
- Multi-Vitamin Scalp Nourishing Growth Oil
- Ancient Egyptian 24 Karat Gold Twisting Gel
Now before I get into if the products worked for me, I want to talk about how the products are presented. I am stickler when it comes to the look of a brand, and The Mane Choice wins in my book when it comes to their aesthetic. Now on to the products!
Let's talk about that Restorative Mask..
According to The Mane Choice website, this mask is "Formulated to help penetrate the hair shaft and infuse your hair with high-quality vitamins and nutrients to help transform your hair into its most optimal and healthiest state. Enriched with biotin, green tea, and carrot oil, this product will immediately begin to help restore dry and damaged strands."
Admittedly, I do not deep condition my hair as often as I should. So I used this after not deep conditioning for over a month! My expectation was that it would leave my hair soft, but not that soft considering my lack of proper hair care. My reality was that it left my hair much softer that I anticipated. My hair was manageable after, so styling was easy. The mask has a light almost citrus-like scent, so if you're one of those persons who doesn't like strongly scented products, then you can definitely use this.
Growth oil? Interesting...
The oil is advertised as "a natural oil blend made exclusively for the scalp. Formulated to help revitalize and rejuvenate, our revitalizing oil is powerful, yet gentle enough to be used daily." They also state that it leaves your scalp feeling soothed & conditioned and that it is lightweight & non-greasy.
Now, the only time i really oil my scalp these days is when my dry scalp starts acting up. Otherwise, I try to keep the oil more on my hair than on my scalp. I will even put forth that I was really apprehensive about even putting this oil on my scalp. But, I did it, and surprisingly, I liked it. I can safely say that at least for me, I can use this oil everyday. It is lightweight, and a little bit goes a long way. If i had to describe the scent of the oil, it would a citrus/earthy scent with a hint of mint, all the while not being over powering to the senses.
Let me tell you guys about this Twisting Gel...
Now I have used quite a few different types of gels, from the traditional Eco Styler/Ampro/Jet Set gels, to home made flaxseed gel, to sticky gooey Gorilla Snot gel. In terms of consistency, this gel from their Ancient Egyptian line is closest to the Gorilla Snot gel, but it isn't as tacky. They described it as "a unique, innovative twisting gel (wash-and-go's too) that functions by keeping your hair soft while delivering amazing definition." I can tell you guys that hands down THIS GEL IS AMAZINGGGGGGG!!!! For my Crowing Glory video give away video, I did a flat twist out using this gel and my hair felt so soft and so defined. This can easily become a holy grail product for me for my twist outs, braid outs and wash and gos. Take note though, this is not the type of gel to hold your edges down, but at the same time, it does help with keeping frizzy hair in check. As for the scent, the Egyptian line has a stronger scent than the original line. I have stuck my nose into this jar too many times trying to figure out the scent, but the best I can come up with is that it has floral/fruity perfume-y scent, AND I LOVE IT!!!
Now about those hair vitamins...
"Manetabolism Plus is a physician-formulated, multicultural, healthy hair growth and retention vitamin that aids in promoting healthy hair, nails, and skin." I took these vitamins as instructed over the course of a month, and though I didn't notice any significant growth, I will say that by the end of the month, my last detangling session did produced less shed hair/breakage. I gather that in order to give a more concise conclusion about these hair vitamins, I'd need to take it for more than a month.
